Wallace Henry Gaucher Jr
Sergeant, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division
Wallace was born the 28th of February 1923 in Hudson, Massachusetts. Raised in Hudson, he attended Hudson schools and graduated from Hudson High School. He was living with his parents at 24 Maplewood Avenue in Marlborough and working at Lapointe Machine Tool Company in Hudson, he enlisted into the Army the 25th of May 1943.
Following his basic training he was assigned to Company L, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division and sent to the European Theater. The 1st Division had been in constant combat since the beginning of the war and was a experienced unit. Having fought across France, the 1st Division pushed ten miles into Czechoslovakia before being told to halt all forward advancement.
On the 5th of May 1945 while liberating the town of Cheb, Czechoslovakia, Wallace was Killed in Action. He is buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in Saint-Avold, France, Plot K, Row 15, Grave 12. Gaucher Circle in Marlborough is named in his honor.
