Property Survey

Historic Properties in Marlborough

In 1994 and 1995 a comprehensive historic property survey was conducted in Marlborough.  Additional information on the survey, including the criteria for including a property in the survey, is
here.

Descriptions of areas and details on individual properties, some of which are mentioned in the narrative on the founding and growth of Marlborough, are listed below.

Working with these files:

  • All of the information from the report (linked below) is presented in documents using the PDF format, an industry standard that is easy to read using any of several free readers.
  • The PDFs may download in a separate window.
  • A print version of the full five-volume report is available for examination from the reference desk of the Marlborough Public Library and by appointment at the Marlborough Historical Society.)
  • If you find broken links or other technical problems, please let us know.
  • Details on the way in which our volunteers scanned the hundreds of pages of paper documents that make up the survey and published them online is here.
  • Note: The entire five-volume report, with full text search, is also available on two CDs that can be purchased from the Society or checked out from the Marlborough Public Library.  Looking up more information on an old house?  The Property Index (immediately below) is the best place to start. There you'll find the name of the house (if one was determined) and the date (or approximate date) it was constructed. The property index also indicates whether there is an individual sheet with detailed information on the house.
  • If there is an individual sheet, you'll find that by street.
  • You may also find information on the house or the neighborhood in which it is located in one of the smaller areas (under "Streets") or larger areas (under "Areas," further down).
  • Finally, the house you're looking for may be mentioned in the historical narrative.
  • The data was collected and the photographs taken in 1994 and 1995. The ownership and condition of properties may have changed over this time; in rare cases, properties that are described in the survey have been demolished.
  • If you wish to support this and other work of the Marlborough Historical Society, here are ways you can.
  • Resources for owners of historic homes are here.

Together with the narrative, the entire five volumes of the Marlborough Survey of Historic, Architectural, and Cultural Resources are online.

It was put online in 2008 as part of the Marlborough Historical Society's commitment to historic preservation and education.

This work was conducted by the volunteers of the Society and is funded 100% by memberships in,
contributions to, and purchases from the Society.  Learn how you can help support these and other efforts.

A print version of the report, which comprises five notebooks, is available for examination from the reference desk of the Marlborough Public Library and by appointment at the
