Nicholas Marco Zompetti
Private 1st Class, 339th Bombardment Squadron, 96th Bombardment Group
Nicholas was born the 9th of May 1922 in Marlborough, Massachusetts the youngest of eight children born to Carl and Josephine Zompetti. He made his home with his parents at 52 Harrison place. He enlisted into the Army Air Corps the 30th of April 1941. Following his basic training, he was assigned to the 339th Bombardment Squadron, 96th Bombardment Group. He was promoted to Private 1st class and was an assistant radio operator aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress the 2nd of December 1942 when the aircraft was performing night operations from Pocatello Army Air Base in Idaho. The aircraft after navigating through a winter storm was flying too low in the Wasatch Mountain range and after an attempt to gain altitude plummeted to the earth in Eight Mile Canyon near Soda Springs, Idaho killing all aboard. Nicholas was buried at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Zompetti Street in Marlborough is named in his honor.
