Henry Chandler Tucker

Chief Yeoman, Naval Receiving Station, Boston, Massachusetts

     Henry was born the 7th of December 1873 in Hudson, Massachusetts.  He worked as a printer with the News Enterprise before enlisting into the Navy the 27th of July 1897.  Following his initial training he was assigned to the USS BROOKLYN (ACR-3) as a Landsman the 18th of October 1897.  He was appointed as a Printer the 28th of March 1898 and served on the staff of Commodore William Schley.  He was aboard the BROOKLYN during the battle of Santiago the 3rd of July 1898 and took part in the sinking of the Spanish fleet.  He was transferred to the USS WABASH the 9th of June 1899 and was discharged the 4th of May 1900.

     He re-enlisted the 31st of August 1900 and was promoted to Yeoman 2nd Class the 11th of September and reported to the USS DIXIE the 30th of September 1900.  The DIXIE took provision and supplies to the island of Martinique following volcanic eruptions in the spring of 1902.  He was transferred to the USS PANTHER the 30th of September 1902 and promoted to Yeoman 1st Class on the 5th of August.  Henry was promoted to Chief Yeoman while serving aboard the PANTHER the 6th of August 1903 and transferred to recruiting duty in Providence Rhode Island the 26th of October 1903.  He was discharged the 30th of August and shortly afterwards married Effie Temple the 5th of September 1904.

     Henry and Effie would have two sons, Frederick and Prescott and a daughter Barbara.  Henry again re-enlisted the 27th of December 1904 and reported aboard the USS COLORADO (ACR-7) the 31st of March 1905 again as a Chief Yeoman.  He was transferred to the USS WABASH the 14th of December 1907 and discharged the 26th of December 1908.  Henry once again re-enlisted the 28th of December 1908 and shortly afterwards reported aboard the WABASH on the 31st of December.  He was transferred to the PANTHER the 10th of June 1911 and served aboard in his position as Chief Yeoman until his discharge the 27th of December 1912.  He again re-enlisted the 17th of January 1913 and served aboard USS VIRGINIA (BB-13) during the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico. He was transferred to recruiting duty in Boston the 31st of December 1915 until his discharge the 16th of January 1917.  He once again re-enlisted and served aboard the receiving ship in Boston harbor and the recruiting station in Boston until his discharge the 19th of October 1920. Henry was then transferred to the Fleet Naval Reserve until being retired the 21st of January 1927. 

     With his retirement Henry was active in many civic organizations and was a member and post Commander of the American Legion Post #100 in Hudson, as well as the Edward Marshall Camp of the United Spanish War Veterans.  His wife Effie died the 9th of August 1938.  Henry remarried Cora May Chase the 2nd of September 1939.  He split his time between his home on 23 Pearl Street in Marlborough and a home in Malden, Massachusetts.  With the outbreak of World War 2, Henry once again re-enlisted into the Navy the 17th of April 1942 and served at the receiving station in Boston as a Chief Yeoman.  He died the 2nd of September 1942 at home in Malden, Massachusetts from a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 68.  He is buried at the Maplewood Cemetery in Marlborough, Massachusetts.  Tucker Avenue in Marlborough is named in his honor.
