Artemas Ward Park

The History of Ward Park and the Four Little Empires of Hayden Meadow

Located between historic Post Road and Fairmount Hill, Ward Park and its surrounding neighborhoods have witnessed the march of American history. William Ward, Col. Luke Drury, Samuel Boyd, Daniel Hayden, the Colonial Army, and even some National Champions are all part of the story that Paul Brodeur, a Marlborough Historical Society Trustee and lifelong resident of the Ward Park neighborhood, presented on March 22, 2011.

His complete presentation is below.

The four empires were . . .

  • The Human Empire of William and Elizabeth Ward--From the founding of Marlborough to the Revolution
  • The Agricultural Empire of Bonney and Daniel Hayden--The growth of the neighborhood in the 19th century
  • The industrial empire of Samuel Boyd--The development of Fairmount Hill and the invention of the City
  • The competitive empire of Ward Park--The practice field of the National Champions

The presentation Paul gave that evening is on this page.  It can be viewed online in the window, full screen, or downloaded and printed.  To view it full screen, click on the icon in the lower right hand corner of the frame.
